Modern orthodontic options mean many teens can explore ways to improve tooth alignment without traditional braces. A case managed by Dr Vincent Wan (Dentist) at First Dental Studio highlights how clear aligner systems may be used to address crowding and bite concerns in younger patients.
A Teen Looking for Options
During a routine six-month check-up, a 15-year-old patient asked about ways to improve the appearance of her front teeth. She was particularly concerned that one tooth appeared to sit further forward while another sat further back than the surrounding teeth.
A full orthodontic assessment was completed, including photographs, X-rays and study models. The analysis showed upper and lower front-tooth crowding, a rotated upper tooth (22), and a crossbite involving tooth 25. A slight shift of the lower midline was also noted.
Discussing Treatment Options
Several options were reviewed with the patient and her mother, including traditional braces, aligner orthodontics, referral to a specialist orthodontist, and monitoring without orthodontic care.
The family preferred aligner therapy. They liked that the appliances could be removed for eating and cleaning and that ClearPath® aligners do not require visible attachments on the teeth.
“For the right patient, clear aligners can offer a more discreet and removable orthodontic option,” says Dr Vincent.
How the Plan Worked
The treatment plan involved 22 upper aligners and 17 lower aligners. Each set was worn for around two weeks and kept in place for most of the day, being removed only for meals and oral hygiene.
During care, one aligner was misplaced. After consulting the aligner provider, the patient progressed to the next aligner in the sequence, allowing the plan to continue as intended.
Over time, the alignment of the teeth improved compared with the starting position.
Maintaining Alignment
At the completion of the aligner series, removable retainers were provided to help maintain the new tooth positions. These are typically worn full-time initially and then nightly as advised.
